Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

b. 29-30

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Wedge in A

Three dots in FE

Two dots in GE1 & EE2 (→EE3)

One dot in GE2 (→GE3)

No marks in GE4 (→GE5)

Four dots in EE4

..

The sources display a great variety of staccato marks over the first two quavers in these bars. In the main text we give the elements of indisputable authenticity – the wedge of A in bar 29 and the dots added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE in bar 30. According to us, the indications of FE and EE4 may also be included in the versions which are potentially compatible with Chopin's intention.

Fingering in A

GE & EE

..

In the main text we give the fingering of A, as in the editions it was reproduced with mistakes. Chopin corrected two out of them in pupils' copies – he added the omitted '1' digit over the 5th note in bar 31 in FES and he changed the '1' digit to '2' over the 3rd note in bar 32 in FED

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

The slur of A was probably overlooked by the engraver of FE (→GE,EE).

Our variant suggestion

..

It is hard to determine what influenced the lack of  in FE (→GE,EE). The engraver of FE omitted or distorted a few such hints in the entire Op. 10. Therefore, we suggest a variant suggestion, giving the indication in brackets.

Slur in A, interpretation

FE (→GE,EE)

..

The slur of A, despite the fact that it begins from the 3rd or 4th semiquaver in bar 33, is certainly to be interpreted as embracing the entire 4 bars. In FE (→GE,EE) the slur in bar 33 was omitted, which is a patent error (in FE the bar is at the end of the line). Although Chopin did not add the slur in bar 33 while proofreading FE, he included sempre legatissimo. However, according to us, this indication does not have to be considered only as a substitute of the slur, which in fact does not limit to determine just the articulation.
