b. 8-9

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

..

In the main text we adopt the quaver tie system applied by Chopin in A. In FE (→GE,EE) the ties in the L.H. may have been changed due to graphic difficulties, embracing three last quavers in bar 8 with one tie and providing the 1st quaver in bar 9 with a stem. In GE3 a similar tie system was applied in bar 8 also in the case of the R.H.

End of slur in A (interpretation), FE (→GE1)

EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

Neither A nor FE allow to determine whether Chopin wanted to lead the slur to the 1st quaver in bar 16 or not. The slur in bar 15 suggests a continuation both in A and FE (→GE1), yet in bar 16 – which in A is the first one written out after the shortcut including bars 10-15 and in the editions the first one in a new line – there is no slur in any of the sources. The first quavers in the bars in the 1st section of the Etude provided with a staccato mark are generally not connected to the pervious slurs, however, in subsequent sections longer slurs prevail. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a slur running to the beginning of bar 16, taking into account the fact that the slur in bar 15 in FE, clearly exceeding the last quaver, could have been written in this form by Chopin.

b. 18

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

..

The text does not raise any doubts here, yet the notation of accidentals differs in particular sources and it is not always precise. In FE the  before the 1st chord in the L.H. was initially placed at the pitch of c1 and it was probably at this stage that the copy constituted the base text for GE, in which the accidental was moved to the correct place (before g). In FE (→EE) the  before c1 was eventually changed to a , yet the necessary  before g was added only in EE. In GE2 (→GE3GE4) a  was added before c1, as well as before c2; the latter was also introduced in EE4. In A there is no flat before gin the 5th chord, which was already added in FE (→GE,EE).
