A - Autograph

Date: IX 1832-III 1833
Title: Etude Nro 12
Dedication: None

Fair score dedicated for base text for the first French edition. It creates one whole with the autograph of the previous Etude in E major, No. 11. At the moment of its creation, it constituted a part of a joint autograph, including six consecutive Etudes, from No. 7 – see the characteristics of A of the Etude in C major, No. 7, where also the issue of the manuscript's dating is briefly discussed.

Similarly as in the case of the Etude in E major, No. 11, the engraver's signs are very poorly visible. The weathered traces of the consecutive even numbers still can be seen on all pages of the manuscript even in the photographs.

A includes almost the final version of the Etude, Chopin changed only a few details at the time of proofreading FE: metronome tempo, the inner note of the chord at the beginning of bar 15, rhythm in bars 27, 30 and 32, octave in bar 34, bass note in bar 41. We can find here numerous and detailed performance indications, although not always precisely written, probably due to haste. However, the attention is drawn to scarce fingering digits and a total lack of pedalling. The hasty notation of the Etude is also revealed by numerous "hooks" at the bottom of note stems, naturals, sometimes bar lines (cf. the characteristics of the autograph of the Mazurka in C major, Op. 24 No. 2). Some of inaccuracies concerning the notation of accidentals (e.g., bars 52-65), and even errors, as overlooking  and  in bar 75, may be blamed on haste.
