EE3 - Corrected impression of [EE2]

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: 1835-1836
Title: Douze Grandes Etudes || No. XII
Dedication: ses amis J. Liszt et Ferd. Hiller

In the first English edition the entire Opus 10 is divided into two books, six Etudes each, while the presented copy belongs to the earliest known impression of the second book. In spite of this, we assign it the EE3 symbol, as on the basis of the comparison with the sources of the first book, it may be assumed that there had been two earlier impressions which we mark as [EE1] and [EE2] (see the Etude in C majorNo. 7).

EE3 generally reproduced the text of FE1, however, we can find here traces of minor revisions, e.g.: slurs in the R.H. in bars 10-11 and 45-46 were added, slurs in the L.H. in bars 37 and 39, 53, 63 and 68, accents in bars 38 and 41, accidentals were completed, e.g., flats in bars 81-82.

In particular situations it is uncertain whether the difference between FE and EE is a result of a mistake or revision, e.g., lack of  in bar 69.

In accordance with the information on the title page – "edited with additional fingering by his pupil, I. Fontana" – Chopin's fingering was significantly completed in EE3 (in 63 bars in total). Mistakes in bars 25 and 67 were corrected, yet, above all, numerous indications precising and developing the authentic indications were added, see the remark concerning bars 1-6.

EE3 was renewed on a number of occasions with different covers – see the Etude in C major, No. 7.

Scarce pencilled annotations visible in the presented copy are of no source value.
