b. 9-14

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE

Fingering in EE

Our suggestion

..

In the main text we give the fingering added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE), completed with Chopin's fingering of identical figures in the following section of the Etude, in this case in bar 54 (cf. General Editorial Principlesp. 17). In EE Fontana developed the fingering of FE, copying Chopin's fingering from analogous figures and adding the indications in the descending fragments of the passages.

b. 9-16

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

..

We give the slurring of the figures in the L.H. in bars 9-10, 15 and similar in the entire Etude only in the standardised version, despite the fact that some of the slurs are inaccurately written. The regularity of the texture and a great number of repetitions of similar figures deny the intentionality of considering these minor divergences in transcriptions. Cf. the remark concerning dynamic hairpins.

b. 9-13

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

FE (→EE)

..

We give the pairs of hairpins, appearing under similar figures in the L.H. in these bars and their repetitions in the entire Etude, in a unified version for each of the sources, in spite of the fact that the marks differ in their range. Same as in the case of slurs, the regularity of the texture and numerous repetitions of similar figures contribute to the decision not to consider these minor divergences in transcriptions.

Fingering written into FED

Our suggestion

..

In FED Chopin added a fingering digit over the last octave in bar 12. We give it in bar 10, in the first appearance of this motif (cf. General Editorial Principlesp. 17).

b. 10-13

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No slurs in A

Slur in FE (→GE)

Slurs in EE

Our suggestion

..

In A lack of the slurs over the motifs in the R.H. in bars 10-11 and 12-13 probably means that the slur over the second motif was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). Lack of a similar addition over the first motif could be explained with the transition to a new page, which in FE falls exactly between bars 10 and 11, yet in a similar situation in analogous bars 20-23 the slur over the first motif was also omitted. In spite of this, in both places we consider the lack of the slur as an inaccuracy of notation and we suggest suitable additions in the main text. The slur in bars 10-11 was already added in EE.
