b. 5

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

in A, contextual interpretation

No indication in FE (→GE,EE

Our variant suggestion

..

Not being certain whether the lack of sempre legato in FE (→GE,EE) is accidental, we give the indication in brackets. In bars 45-46 the analogous passage is embraced with slurs in all sources, which indirectly confirms the legato articulation also in this case. In spite of the fact that the indication in A begins only in the 2nd group of semiquavers, its binding force from the beginning of the passage is undeniable.

b. 5

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

con forza in A

con fuoco in FE (→GE,EE)

..

It is hard to state how con forza written in A would become con fuoco in FE (→GE,EE). In the editors opinion a mistake in reading the manuscript is quite probable. However, we keep the published version in the main text because Chopin undoubtedly controlled the performance indications while proofreading FE – i.a. he added just con forza in bar 15 – and did not change anything at the place under discussion.

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No fingering in A (→FEGE)

Fingering in EE

Fingering written into FED

..

In the main text we include the fingering written by Chopin in FED. Fontana suggested identical fingering in EE.

b. 7-9

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE)

Fingering in EE

..

In the main text we give the fingering added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE). Fontana added it in EE in a way which can be considered as naturally stemming from Chopin's hints (although certainly not the only one in the 2nd half of bar 8).

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

in A

in FE (→GE,EE

..

The omission of the dashes limiting the range of the dynamic change in FE (→GE,EE) belongs to the most frequent inaccuracies of French first editions of Chopin's works.
