b. 80

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Crotchet in A

Minim in FE (→GE,EE

Crotchet, notation suggested by the editors

..

The value of minim, given to the bottom note of the c1-ffourth in FE (→GE,EE), is most probably erroneous. In the main text we give the written in A crotchet, which we however write with a separate stem in order to avoid ambiguity.

b. 80

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Plain minim in A (→FEGE1,EE#)

Dotted minim in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

The missing dot extending the c2 minim is, according to us, the composer's error. Chopin would often extend or separate some of the notes with additional stems or ties without taking care of the rhythmic values of these "voices" to fill the entire bar. However, in this case the rhythmic gap concerns the main melodic line, which was rather not intended, as Chopin embraced it with a slur. The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3GE4) and EE4.

b. 81

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No fingering in A (→FEGE)

Fingering in EE

..

We do not include the fingering added by Fontana in EE. It is based on the fingering indicated by Chopin in bars 1 and 5.

b. 81-82

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

..

In A the naturals raising e to are written only before the topmost note of the chord at the beginning of bars 81 and 82 (also before in the R.H.) and the flats lowering to d (in different octaves) – only on the 2nd beat of bar 81. In FE before the lower note of the chord in bar 81 and flats of d on the 2nd beat of bar 82 were added to them. In GE all missing accidentals were added (also before d in the R.H.). In EE3 flats on the 4th beat of bar 81 were added (only in the L.H.) and on the 4th beat of bar 82 (both), while EE4 has accidentals in the same places as GE.
