b. 40

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE

Fingering in EE

Fingering written into FED

Our variant suggestion

..

The fingering of FE (→GE) is certainly authentic, as Chopin added it while proofreading FE. The same fingering, completed in the lowest octave by Fontana, is given in EE. However, in FED there is another one written next to the non-removed printed fingering, which is undoubtedly supposed to replace it. The second fingering allows for omitting a wider position between the 3rd and 4th fingers, which could be problematic. In the main text we include both authentic fingerings.

Accent in A, interpretation

No mark in FE (→GE,EE

..

We consider the mark of A, which is quite unclear, as a long accent. The atypical notation probably stems from lack of space caused by the corrections performed one line above. This could also have been a reason for the mark's omission in the editions.

In EE Fontana repeated here the fingering he gave in analogous bars 1-2. In the main text we include only the digit written by the composer in the pupils' copy. Cf. the remark concerning bars 45-50.

Octave in FE (→GE,EE

..

The octave in FE (→GE,EE) was most probably introduced by Chopin at the time of proofreading FE. However, it is puzzling that the traces of the performed changes visible in FE suggest corrections from a totally different version (the A1-c tenth?).
