Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 7

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

..

In the sources there are sharps reminding of the already previously marked raise of these notes before the 8th and 12th semiquavers – a2 and f2. We do not consider them in the main text, as the correct text results here from both the rules on accidentals' validity and the melodic context and fingering. The sharp before a2 is included in CLI, GE2 (→GE3) and EE4. The sharp before fis present in FE (→GE1GE2GE3,→EE).

In the manuscripts there are no cautionary naturals before the first two semiquavers in the upper voice. In FE (→GE,EE) there is a sign before e2, while in GE and EE4 was added also before f2.

No accidental in CLI & Ap

 before a1 in FE (→GE,EE

..

Chopin added a cautionary  before a1 still in the handwritten base text for FE (→GE,EE). In the situation in which the opening phrase of the Etude appears already for the third time, written from a new line of the text, the sign seems to be superfluous.

FE (→GE,EE) has cautionary naturals before the last semiquaver in bars 9 and 13. Despite being undeniably authentic, the signs are, according to us, unnecessary in such a regular figuration.
