b. 493

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

in EE

Octave in GC (→GE) & FE

..

In EE E1 must have been omitted. Similarly to the previous bars, we replace the existing notation - 8 - with written out notes.

b. 494

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Indications in EE & GC (→GE)

No indications in FE

..

Without clear proofs that Chopin purposefully omitted both indications, we see their lack in FE as the notation's inaccuracy. If they had not been included in [A2] which served as the basis for this edition, this must have been the composer's inattention possibly caused by haste.

b. 495

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Short accent in EE & GC (→GE)

Long accent in FE

..

Long accent in FE seems to harmonize better with the phrase's character.

Slurs in EE

FE and GE

..

In the main text we present consistent and logical slurring of FE (only at the beginning of b. 497 the slur's ending/extention from previous bars is missing). They are present in GE, despite different notation of GC, where the slurs in line-ending bars 496, 504 and 512 may actually suggest continuation (except b. 520) but for the lack of their completion at the beginning of bars 497, 505 and 513. EE has varied slurring: twice a three-bar slurs and twice two times longer.

Slurs in EE and FE

Slurs in both hands in GE

..

In this part also - the last one of its kind in the passage of Scherzo - the beginning of slurs in GC raises doubts when it comes to intrerpreting Chopin's intentions. Already in GE, based on GC, the GC were never rewritten here in accordance with the noatation (while slurs for LH were added). In EE and FE the slurs always begin on quaver figurations (except for the obviously wrongly missing slur in EE in b. 521). In GC the endings of the discussed slurs are notated inaccurately: in bars 501, 509 and 517 the slurs end over the pause on the second beat of the bar.
