Slurs

b. 12

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

A probable reading of the slur of A

..

It is not clear whether Chopin intended the slur in A to apply only to the upper notes of the octaves or to reach further. In GE (→FEEE), that second option was adopted, and the slur extended to the last quaver. Both versions may be considered as matching the notation of A. The slur for the upper notes only emphasizes the (hidden) two-part aspect , while the whole-bar slur link the end of the previous phrase with the transition to the next one.

b. 13-14

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

A slur in A and GE2 (→GE3)

Slurs in  GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A, the phrase is covered with a single slur (up to the 2nd beat of bar 14); this version is correctly reproduced in GE2 (→GE3). Meanwhile, in GE1 the notation is ambiguous, as the slur in the line-ending bar 13 reaches the last quaver only. This was the reason why in FE (→EE) the motif in bar 14 was embraced with a separate slur.

b. 18-19

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

Possible reading of the slur of A (→GEFEEE)

Possible reading of the slur of A (→GEFEEE)

..

The slur of A may be read in two ways that are practically equal in validity. In GE (→FEEE) the version with a shorter slur was assumed. Cf. bars 50-51 and 112-113.

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

A slur in A

Without a slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

There are two deleted bars between bars 19 and 20 in A (see the note above). The slur a1-b1 leads from bar 19 to the deleted version of bar 20, yet it has no ending in the undeleted version. This was why it was omitted in GE (→FEEE). Still, the notation of A, although inaccurate, does not indicate the wish to eliminate the slur.

A slur over the triplet in A

No extra slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The extra slur over the triplet in A was omitted in GE (→FEEE). In the context, that slur is just part of the triplet marking and we do not take it into consideration (cf. General Editorial Principlespoint 16).
