b. 52

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

No dot in A (→GE1FEEE)

A dot in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The staccato dot above the 2nd chord of the L.H. was added in GE2 (→GE3) probably by analogy to bar 20. We do not include that arbitrary addition in our main text.

b. 53

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

Without a dot in A (→GE)

A dot in FE (→EE)

..

The third staccato dot in this bar, appearing in FE (→EE), is most probably a mistake. Notes on which short slurs begin are contrasted in A with staccato-marked notes ending the slurred crotchet pairs. The FE dot would disturb that regularity, with the detriment to the clarity of the entire transition section (bars 52-56).

b. 54

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

No staccato sign in  A (→GE1FEEE)

A dot in GE2 (→GE3)

staccato dot was added in GE2 (→GE3) over the 2nd chord, probably by analogy to bar 51 and also bars 50 and 52. That dot does not appear in A (→GE1FEEE), and in our opinion the occurrence of dots, accents and slurs in this fragment is not regular enough to justify potential additions.

 and an accent in A

 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In  A the accent mark and  are written one on top of the other, so it is not clear whether both should be taken into consideration or whether one was meant to replace the other. In GE (→FEEE) that notation was understood as replacement of the accent with . However, as there are no visible attempts to remove any of the marks, perhaps Chopin could mean superimposing one on the other, the effect known from numerous combinations such as . Therefore we give both marks in our main text.

b. 55

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

A dot in A (→GE2GE3)

No sign in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

We consider the omission of the dot above the 1st crotchet in GE1 (→FEEE) to be accidental, as the engraver probably placed the dot above a wrong note. The dot was supplemented in GE2 (→GE3).
