Slurs

b. 28-29

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slurs from f3(2) in A

Slurs from f3 & g2 in GE (→FE,EE)

No slurs in IE

..

In A the L.H. slurs in both bars encompass the last 6 quavers, constituting a descending scale sequence. The extension of the latter is a clear example of adjusting slurs to rhythmic units, in this case bar. The absence of the slurs in IE most probably resulted from an oversight.

b. 28-30

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

When interpreted literally, all 3 slurs starting from the a notes reach only the penultimate quaver in the bar in A. However, there is no doubt that it is an inaccuracy – cf. the A slurs in the L.H. part in bars 28-29 – hence we do not consider them an actual variant and reproduce them in this form only in the graphic transcription. In GE (→FE,EE,IE) the slurs were led to the last quaver, in accordance with our interpretation thereof.

b. 30

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

No slur in A

Slur from g1 in GE (→FE,IE)

Slur from g1 in EE, our suggestion

..

The fact that Chopin omitted the L.H. slur was almost certainly caused by the lack of space for writing it – this bar is written in A in the bass clef, while over the highly placed notes there is a fragment of the diminuendo indication and the R.H. slur. In the main text we provide a slur compliant with the slurs in the previous bars. The whole-bar GE slur (→FE,IE) resulted from an arbitrary decision by the engraver of GE (as in the preceding and the next bar). It is difficult to say whether EE shortening the slur (with respect to GE) is an inaccuracy or a lucky revision (after the R.H. slur?).

b. 31

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

No slurs in A

Continuous slur in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

2 slurs suggested by the editors

..

Leaving one of the four similar figures without slurs must be considered Chopin's oversight, hence in the main text we suggest supplementing slurs after the previous bars. The slur added in GE (→FE,EE,IE) changes the Chopinesque scheme for no apparent reason.

b. 31

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

Just like the other slurs added in this fragment, the GE slur (→FE,EE,IE) is inconsistent with the authentic slurs in bars 28-30. In the main text we leave here the authentic notation without L.H. slurs, as the performance of this part is indicated by the slurs added by us over the R.H. part.
