b. 198

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

in A

No indication in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In the main text we provide the  indication as it was written in A. Its absence in GE (→FE,EE,IE) could be explained by an oversight by the engraver or by a revision due to incompliance with the markings in analogous bar 15. Taking into account this incompliance, according to us, the version of the editions may be considered an acceptable variant.

Slur to g in A

Slur to f in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The shorter GE slur (→FE,EE,IE) could be an inaccuracy or a revision aimed at bringing this place into line with the authentic slurs in analogous bars 17-19. After all, the difference between the ways these places were written down in A suggests that Chopin considered them almost equivalent.

Crotchet f1 in A, probable interpretation

Crotchets g1 f1 in A, possible interpretation

No crotchets in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The little vertical line visible in A close to the g1 quaver could be the first of a series of additional crotchet stems prolonging the top notes of the broken L.H. octaves. However, according to us, it is more likely that this series starts from f1, which draws our attention to the harmonic sequence, which becomes more functional from this place on – two perfect cadences in C minor and a modulation to G. The omitted crotchet stem to f1 in the editions is most probably a mistake.
