b. 39

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

e in A (literal reading→GEEE,IE)

e in FE

..

When interpreted literally, the A version must be erroneous – a chord featuring e would be conceivable if there were, for example, a D chord at the beginning of the next bar, which would result in a correct modulation to the key of G minor. However, the resolution to D minor means that this bar is an exact transposition of bar 35 and that the last L.H. crotchet must be A-e, as it is in FE.

b. 40-42

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Short accents in A, EE & IE

Long accents in GE (→FE)

..

In A the four accents in these bars do not differ in size from the next three ones in bar 43. Nevertheless, in GE (→FE) they were reproduced as long accents, which seem more accurate if we take into account the long rhythmic values of the accented chords. Long accents are also supported by them having been shifted beyond the note (although the shift is minimal) and by them having been written slightly more distinctly in bars 44-46, and particularly in bar 52.
The short accents in EE and IE resulted from an inaccurate reproduction of the GE notation; their compliance with the A notation is accidental.

b. 42-44

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

In A there are no accidentals to the 7th quaver in bar 42 and the 3rd quaver in bar 43 (a2) and to the topmost note in bar 44 (f3). Chopin's patent oversight was corrected in GE (→FE,EE,IE).
