b. 38-40

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt III

Crotchets d1 & c1 in A

No crotchets in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In the main text we provide the division into parts as written down in A. The notation is accurate enough to rule out the possibility of random inaccuracies, which is undoubtedly the case in other places in the Sonata. The simplified notation of the editions partially conceals the harmonic legato effect, that is holding notes of chords with fingers to achieve a more complete harmonic filling.

b. 38

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt III

a in A, literal reading

a in A (contextual interpretation→GEFE,EE,IE)

..

The missing  raising a to a is almost certainly Chopin's oversight – in the entire A accidentals are generally valid in all octaves (cf. bar 10 and dozens of examples in mov. I and IV). The accidental was added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

No fingering in A (→GEFE,IE)

Fingering in EE1

Fingering in EE2

In the main text we omit the inauthentic fingering added in EE (in both impressions).

The (cautionary?) flat to b added in GE (→FE,EE,IE) is almost certainly a mistake – there is no musical justification for it. According to us, the GE engraver could have taken the digit 3 for a , as in A the digit was inserted in a place in which one could expect an accidental. In the main text we omit it.
