Slurs
b. 41
|
composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I
..
Due to asymmetrical alignment of the A slur with respect to the staccato dots, one could assume that it encompasses the entire 2nd half of the bar. However, according to us, Chopin almost certainly envisioned here a slur over the three quavers, as it was interpreted by GE (→EE,IE). The longer FE slur does not have to suggest that the FE editors had access to A, since engravers would often adjust slurs or dynamic hairpins to natural rhythmic groups, for example, groups of notes under one beam. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Inaccurate slurs in A |

b. 41
|
composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I
..
In the main text we leave the literal interpretation of the A slur, although graphically speaking, it would be justified to consider it an inaccurate half-bar slur – see bars 17-20. In this case the musical argument used there cannot be applied – it is not one of many similar accompanying figures. GE (→FE,EE,IE) approached the slur the same way as in the vast majority of graphically similar situations. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |

b. 43-46
|
composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I
..
In bars 43-44 and 46 the L.H. quaver groups are not encompassed with slurs. As the vast majority of analogous motifs, both before (bar 16 and 42) and after (bars 171-174, 207-208, 241 and 243), is provided with slurs in A, we add similar slurs in these places too. The slurs were also added by GE (→FE,EE,IE), while in bar 43 EE overlooked the slur. The range of the slurs can be questionable – see the note on bars 45-48. In accordance with the analysis carried out in those bars, we adopt here four-quaver slurs as well. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Errors in EE , GE revisions |

b. 45
|
composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I
..
According to us, the fact that one of 5 analogous motifs was left without a slur can be ascribed to Chopin's oversight in A, hence in the main text we suggest adding a slur. It was also added by GE (→FE,EE,IE). See also the note on bars 43-48. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Errors in EE , GE revisions |

b. 45-48
|
composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

In A it is unclear whether the L.H. slurs in bar 45 and 47-48 encompass 4 quavers or whether they reach the first crotchet. As in bars 207-208, which are identical with bars 47-48, the slurs clearly reach only the 4th quaver, this is the interpretation we adopt in this case as well. The same interpretation was adopted by GE (→FE,EE,IE). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness issues: Inaccurate slurs in A |
