b. 79

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

e in A

e in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

e (with ) suggested by the editors

..

The  raising e to e added by GE (→FE,EE,IE) resulted from a routine revision, locally adjusting the L.H. chord sound to the g1-e2 sixth in the R.H. (cf. a similar revision in GE1 in the Etude in A minor, Op. 10 No. 2, bar 7). In fact, despite the temporary presence of the key of C major in bars 75-77, the general key is still C minor (from bar 73 on), while e2 is a transitory note. Therefore, in the main text we leave e, present in A, adding a cautionary  to this note to avoid any misunderstanding.

b. 82-86

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

..

In the main text we do not include the cautionary  to c2 at the beginning of bar 82 added by GE (→FE,EE,IE). By contrast, we add naturals – necessary and cautionary – to c2 and c3 at the beginning of each half of the bar starting from the 2nd half of bar 82 to the 1st half of bar 86. The majority of them were also added by GE (→FE,EE,IE) – the only overlooked accidentals are: the ones in the 2nd half of bar 82, the 1st half of bar 83 and the accidental to c2 in the 2nd half of bar 83 (in FE the first one was added).

d2 in A (→GEEE), contextual interpretation & FE

c2 in IE

..

In A (→GEEE) there is no accidental to the top note of the penultimate fourth, which gives d2. The flat to d2 in the next quaver proves Chopin's patent mistake, yet it was only FE that added the necessary . In IE the erroneous GE version was revised by changing this note to c2, which is quite satisfying in terms of sound, yet certainly inauthentic.
