Verbal indications

b. 42

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

No indication in A, FE (→EE) & GE2

poco - - in GE1

..

Placing the word poco already in this bar is a mistake by the engraver of GE1, who inserted it guided by the division of the text into great staves, and not by the text itself – both in A and GE1 this word is at the beginning of a line, which, however, corresponds to bar 43 in A, but to bar 42 in GE. The described origin of the mistake is confirmed by a crotchet rest having been erroneously placed here on the top stave, also 'borrowed' from bar 43. The mistakes were corrected in GE2.

b. 43

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

in A (→GE)

No marking in FE (→EE)

..

The absence of  in FE (→EE) can be explained in many different ways, which we sort by likelihood (from most to least likely, according to us):

  • the mark was overlooked by the copyist in [FC] or by the engraver of FE1;
  • Chopin added it to A after [FC] had already been finished;
  • the mark was removed by Chopin in [FC];
  • Chopin removed it while proofreading FE1 (no visible traces of such a procedure).

In this situation, taking into account the first two possibilities and the authority of the principal source, we give  directly in the main text.

Similarly, in bar 54.

b. 43

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

poco - - from beginning of bar in A & GE2

poco - - from mid-bar in FE (→EE)

- - - in GE1

..

The absence of the first poco in GE1 is a mistake by the engraver, who put it in the preceding bar. The mistake was corrected in GE2. It is difficult to definitely say what the origin of this poco having been placed differently in A and FE is. It could have been related to the corrections visible in A – Chopin changed there the layout of particular elements of the poco - - a poco indication, while the placement of the first poco in FE – in the middle of bar 43 – corresponds to the initial, deleted A notation.

b. 62-63

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

..

In these bars GE does not include the dashes marking the range of cresc. It must be a mistake – the marks were overlooked after moving on to the next line.

b. 68

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

agitato in A (→GE) & EE2

No indication in FE (→EE1)

..

In the main text we give agitato, probably added by Chopin to A after [FC] had been finished. On the basis of GE1, it was also added by EE2.
