b. 50

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

In FE (→GE) we can see here "zf", which we change to the correct , as it was done in EE. The issue of the Chopinesque notation of forzato and its variants appearing in the sources is discussed in detail in the note in bar 1.

b. 54-55

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

In FE in bar 54 and 55 the augmentation dots to the L.H. f minims are missing. It must be an oversight, in GE corrected only in bar 55, while in EE in both bars. Moreover, in GE the augmentation dot to the e1 crotchet in bar 54 was overlooked. We comprehensively discuss all irregularities concerning the rhythmic notation and the issue of division into parts in this fragment of the Variations in the note in bar 39.

Minim in FE (→GE,EE)

Crotchet suggested by editors

..

The f dotted minim present in the sources is almost certainly erroneous. It could be a remaining element of the initial, original bass version – in the opera score this f lasts 5 quavers and goes directly to d. Chopin changed the bass line by adding a b crotchet in the middle of the bar, but apparently he did not make sure the preceding f note was shortened accordingly. In the main text we replace the minim by a crotchet, resulting in a logical bass sequence.

b. 58

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

In FE the f note at the beginning of the bar is a dotted minim, which must be considered a mistake in this context. In the main text we include the correction introduced by GE and EE, in which the minim was replaced by a crotchet. We list all irregularities concerning the rhythmic notation and the issue of division into parts in the theme and in the first variation in the note in bar 39.
