composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Minim in FE (→GE,EE)

Crotchet suggested by editors

..

The f dotted minim present in the sources is almost certainly erroneous. It could be a remaining element of the initial, original bass version – in the opera score this f lasts 5 quavers and goes directly to d. Chopin changed the bass line by adding a b crotchet in the middle of the bar, but apparently he did not make sure the preceding f note was shortened accordingly. In the main text we replace the minim by a crotchet, resulting in a logical bass sequence.
Cf. bar 58.

From this point onwards, in FE all ritenuto terms are incorrectly spelled as rittenuto (bars 78, 87, 100, 112 and 114, 123 and 133). It is very likely that this corresponds to the notation of [A], as the young Chopin wrote this indication this way several times – see e.g. Etudes, op. 10, in E no. 3, bars 16 and 53 or in F minor no. 9, bars 8 and 63 (in the Sonata in C minor, op. 4, mvt. IV we also find rittardando in bar 93). The errors were corrected in GE (everywhere) and partially in EE (only in bars 57 and 123).

In FE the f note at the beginning of the bar is a dotted minim, which must be considered a mistake in this context. In the main text we include the correction introduced by GE and EE, in which the minim was replaced by a crotchet. We list all irregularities concerning the rhythmic notation and the issue of division into parts in the theme and in the first variation in the note in bar 39.

Crotchet a1 in FE (→EE)

Dotted crotchet in GE

..

In the main text we include the augmentation dot to the a1 crotchet added in GE. Its absence is most probably a mistake, since there is no reason for this a1 not to go smoothly to b1.
