b. 1-2

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

c & d in As & AI

C & D in A & FE (→GE,EE)

..

In As and AI the bass notes in bars 1-2 are written an octave higher than in the version prepared for print (in A one can see traces of corrections from c to C in bar 1). Lowering bass is one of frequently used interventions by Chopin at the time of elaborating original ideas – cf. bars 14, 32, 39 and 55, 65 and 81, as well as, e.g., the Waltz in D major, No. 1, bars 50 and 77.

b. 4-11

composition: Op. 63 No. 2, Mazurka in F minor

f in As

F in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Moving basses in similar contexts an octave lower (and sometimes replacing them with octaves) is one of the most frequent changes introduced by Chopin while refining already shaped, yet not completely ready musical ideas. See also bar 11.

b. 5-7

composition: Op. 63 No. 3, Mazurka in C# minor

Lower register of accompaniment in FE1 (→GE)

Higher register of accompaniment in FE2 (→EEW)

..

The authenticity of the change of position of the accompanying chords and the bass register introduced in FE2 (→EE) is unquestionable. In a later version Chopin polished up the sequence of 3 voices contained in chords in the tenor and alto register and avoided a parallel shift of chords (G major→C minor) between bars 7 and 8.

b. 8

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Minim F in AsI

No F in A (→GEFESB,EE1EE2)

Octaves in FE & EE3

..

The AsI version is the original redaction of the bass part in this bar. In the main text we include the bottom notes of the octaves added – almost certainly by Chopin – in the stage of proofreading FE1. The addition was also introduced into EE3, most probably pursuant to FE2.
