Issues : Inaccuracies in GC

b. 25

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

The naturals before the 3rd octave of the bar are only in EE, FE4 and GE2. Chopin's patent inaccuracy was completed by revisers in probably all cases (certainly in GE2).

b. 26

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

 in A (→FE)

GC (→GE)

..

Both the earlier start of the  mark in GC (→GE) and the fact of its shortening in EE is a result of an inaccurate interpretation of A.

Slur in GC (literal reading→GE1)

Slur in GC, contextual interpretation

Slurs in FE

Slurs in EE

Slur in GE2 (→GE3), possible interpretation of GC

..

In the main text we give the most natural, according to us, interpretation of the notation of GC, including Gutmann's inclination to draw (too) broad slurs – cf. the Etude in A minor, No. 11, bar 9. The slurs of FE do not raise major concerns, in turn, the broken slur in EE seems to be a result of a misunderstanding – a context interpretation of the slurring of the base text to this edition could have led to the version of GE2 (→GE3). See also the note to bar 25.

b. 26-27

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Slurs in GC (contextual interpretation →GE)

No slurs in FE1

Slurs in FE2 (→EE,FE3FE4)

..

The oversight of the engraver of FE1 – he overlooked three slurs at the beginning of a new line, similarly as accents – was completed in the later FE, yet inaccurately (a too short 2nd slur in bar 26). In this case, the very careless slurs of GC did not mislead the engraver of GE.

b. 29-30

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

The notation of accidentals in this passage is inaccurate in the sources, which, however, does not impede the interpretation of the correct text. In GC and previous FE, eight sharps are missing – before fcf1 and c2 in the L.H. and before c2f2c3 and f3 in the R.H. In EE, GE and FE4 the signs were added, but only GE2 includes the fully correct notation.
