Issues : Inaccuracies in GC

b. 16

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

in GC

 in FE (→ EE1)

in GE

in EE2

..

The differences between GC, FE (→EE1) and GE seem to be accidental inaccuracies. The solution we suggest in the main text is an attempt to reconstruct [A] on the basis of the discrepancies between GC and FE. The same range of the  hairpin was introduced in EE2 - probably on the basis of a comparison of FE with GE.

Slur up to bar 21 in GC

No slur in FE1

Slur in bars 17-20 in FE2 (→EE,FE3FE4) & GE

..

No slur in FE1 is undoubtedly an oversight of the engraver, corrected – certainly on the basis of [A] – in FE2. However, it is not entirely clear what the range of the slur intended by Chopin was, as the sources based on [A] seem to convey different versions and both the copyist and the engraver of FE did not always faithfully reproduce Chopin's notation. In addition, the slur of GC, despite the fact that it clearly reaches the beginning of bar 21, cannot be considered to be unambiguous – the beginning of the slur also exceeds the bar line, which cannot mean its starting in bar 16. It is the recapitulation that comes to help (bars 205-209), in which the engraver of FE1, looking at the same place of [A], interpreted the slur differently than for the first time, yet in accordance with the more likely, literal interpretation of GC. Due to this fact, in the main text we give the slur reaching until E1-E. See also bars 61-65.

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs in A (literal reading→FE)

One slur in GC (→GE) & EE

..

Nothing indicates that the continuous slur in GC (→GE) and EE corresponds to Chopin's intention. However, the range of the slur that ends in this bar is open to question in A. In the editors' opinion Chopin probably meant a slur encompassing the whole first half of the bar, and not only reaching the first note in the upper voice – see slurs in similar context in bars 38 and 40.

Slurs in A

One slur in GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

It is puzzling why all sources based on A have a continuous slur in the L.H. despite two clearly separate slurs in A itself. It is even more striking with an analogous situation taking place in bars 20 and 22 too.

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

..

In GC and EE1 (→EE2) there is no  returning c in the last chord in the L.H. The sign was added in GE and EE3, and probably also in the proofreading of FE.
