Issues : Errors of GC

b. 20

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

..

The correct notation of the trill in the 1st half of this bar and all its repetitions – bars 28, 74 and 82 – appeared in the sources (not including pupil's copies) only several years after the publication of the Sonata, in EE2 and GE2. The mistake was committed by Chopin, who in [A] (→GCGE1GE2mar,→FE1FE2EE2) wrote the trill minim as a G (with a cautionary ). The error was noticed in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4,FE5), however, at the time of performing the correction, another mistake was committed, by moving the note mechanically together with the preceding it flat, which resulted in an F. The correct text was marked in all pupil's copies.
A similar mistake, consisting in writing the top second of the main note of the trill instead of the main one, from which the trill starts in this context, is to be find also in, e.g., the Bolero in A minor, Op. 19, bar 187.

In EE there is also no wavy line after the trill.

b. 21-22

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

No slur in GC (→GE1)

Slur in FE (→EE) & GE2mar (→GE2)

..

The absence of the slur in GC (→GE1) is undoubtedly a mistake of the copyist. In GE2mar (→GE2) the sign was added on the basis of analogous bars.

b. 22

composition: Op. 25 No 11, Etude in A minor

No digit in GC (→GE)

'5' in FE & EE

..

Lack of the '5' digit over the 7th semiquaver in GC (→GE) is certainly an oversight of the copyist.

b. 22

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

GC and FE1 (→FE2FE3) do not include naturals before the octave on the 4th quaver of the bar. The flats before g2 and g1 in the 2nd half of the bar prove Chopin's oversight. The naturals were added in GE and EE, as well as in FE4.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

No accidental in GC (→GE), FE1 (→FE2) & EE

 raising d2 to d2 in FE3 (→FE4)

..

The natural raising d2 to d2, added – most probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4) is most likely a correction of a mistake and not a new version of this detail. The bottom notes of the dyads (and in the chords also the middle ones), unless they are an octave doubling of the top voice, always belong to the components of a current chord in the entire section comprising bars 17-36.
