b. 487

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

..

As in bar 483, FE contains two cautionary accidentals in this bar – a  before f2 (the 3rd semiquaver) and a  before a on the 4th quaver – added most probably in the last phase of proofreading, since they are absent in GE. GE, in turn, added sharps before g2 and g. The latter was added also in EE, yet the  on the 4th quaver was overlooked. In the main text, we include all the aforementioned accidentals.

b. 492

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

f-a in [ReF]

in Morch

e-b in A (contextual interpretation→GEFE1EE)

f-b in FE2

..

The tonic chord in the second inversion in [ReF] must be the original version of this quaver, eventually rejected by Chopin, since all the remaining sources feature a dominant chord in this place. According to us, the corrections introducing a new concept in the orchestral part were not entirely controlled by Chopin, which manifested itself in the omission of the seventh in Morch among others. However, the seventh is present in the piano reduction of A and in all editions. In the last phase of proofreading of FE2, the composer introduced another change, replacing the third of the chord with a transitory fourth. We include the latest, probably final, version in the main text.

In FE, one can see traces of prolongation of the slur, which was originally reaching only the end of bar 493.

Slur from quaver in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Slur from semiquavers in GE3

..

A later start of the slur in GE3, although seemingly justified, is probably contrary to Chopin's final intention. The traces visible in FE prove that the four-bar slur starting from the 1st quaver resulted from proofreading – originally, these bars were provided with shorter slurs, out of which the first one, encompassing bar 496 only, most probably started after the 1st quaver.
