b. 233

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

d in A (→GE), EE & FES

f in FE

..

The logic of the figuration's structure and a comparison with analogous bar 235 point to a Terzverschreibung error of FE. The conclusion finds confirmation in a correction of this note performed in pencil – perhaps with Chopin's hand – in FES.

The change of  to  is a relatively frequent mistake in the first editions; however, it is generally encountered when the base text to an edition was a manuscript.

b. 233-235

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No fingering in A (→GE)

Fingering in FE (→EE)

..

The fingering of the first two semiquavers was added by Chopin, while proofreading FE (→EE). See also bar 237.

c3 in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

c3 in GE3

..

The version of GE3, in which the first quaver of the top voice in bars 233 and 235 is c3, was created almost 10 years after Chopin's death. The reason for the revision was probably the presence of c2 two quavers later. Moreover, it is the missing necessary  lowering d3 to d3 in a similar situation in bar 239 in the previous GE (and FE) that could have convinced the reviser that it is a mistake.

Crotchet B in FE (→GE,EE)

Staccato dot suggested by the editors

..

We consider the additional crotchet stem next to B to be a mistake – apart from this place, in the entire eight-bar section (bars 232-239), it is only the accented, topmost notes of the bass voice that are prolonged. That voice creates a lively, dance phrase, marked with the indication ben marcato and separated with staccato dots or accents – the discussed crotchet would have blurred this clear image. Cf. bar 235.
