b. 164-165

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In these bars, there are no flats to a1 and A in A (→FE) (the accidental to a at the end of b. 164 is not necessary due to a respective  to the L.H. chord). What is more, the remaining necessary flats were inserted only in the first half of each of these bars. Moreover, in A Chopin even deleted the  that was initially put to G in b. 165 (cf. the description of A in some Preludes, Op. 28, e.g. in F minor, No. 8). GE and EE include the version adopted by us.

Arpeggio sign in A

No sign in FE (→GE,EE)

The missing arpeggio mark in the editions must have resulted from a mistake by the engraver of FE.

b. 164-167

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In AsI the L.H. part is marked in an abridged manner with the word unisono, written in each bar. The alternative L.H. part is written on the same stave, which we keep in the graphic transcription ("transcript"). In the content transcription, the abridged notation of the L.H. demisemiquavers was elaborated (they were written out), while the alternative accompaniment was placed on an additional stave, as in the other sources.

b. 164-168

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

in A (→GE)

No signs in FE (→EE1)

in b. 168 in EE2

..

The  marks in bar 164 and 168 were most probably added by Chopin to A (→GE) after the basis for FE, that is [FC], had been finished (cf. further dynamic indications absent in FE in this fragment,  in bar 172, two cresc. - - in bars 174-179 and  in bar 180). The second hairpin was added by EE2 after comparing it with GE1
