b. 138

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

Sixths in AI

3-note chords in AF (→FEEE) & GE

..

The version of AI is original and most probably connected to the original version – except for the top voice – of the R.H. part.

b. 138

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Overlapping slurs in A, probable interpretation

Continuous slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A, the slur at the end of b. 137, which ends the line, clearly indicates that it should be continued, yet in b. 138 a new slur begins. This very frequent inaccuracy was interpreted by FE (→GE,EE) as a continuous slur. In the main text we suggest a different solution, since in b. 138 a new theme of the Ballade begins.

b. 138-140

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, there is no  restoring b2 in b. 138 and in the next two, which are marked in an abridged manner as a repetition of this bar. The mistake, typical of Chopin, was corrected by FE (→GE,EE), probably at Chopin's request. There is a similar situation in b. 142-144.

b. 138-140

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In FE, the bass clefs at the end of these bars and the treble clef after e in b. 139 were overlooked. The patent mistakes were corrected by GE and EE.

b. 138

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

scherzando in A

No indication in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Unlike in the case of the agogic markings in b. 125 and 136, it is difficult to find a justification for a possible abandonment of the scherzando indication. Therefore, we include it in the main text; we signalise its absence in the principal source by using brackets.
