b. 100-101

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

New slur from 1st quaver in AI

Continuous slur in AF (→FEEE)

New slur from 2nd quaver in GE

Overlapping slurs suggested by the editors

..

In AF one can see a correction of slurring in this place – the slurs, initially separated by a bar line (like in AI), were then combined. According to us, hesitation about the range of these slurs, visible in this and analogous places (b. 8-9), does not allow us to consider this correction to be final, since Chopin corrected only one of the versions of the divided slurs. In addition, in b. 8-9 the same slurring was probably corrected by Chopin in a different manner, although actually resulting in the same effect. Taking into account the above, in the main text we give the version that was corrected later. The versions of FE and GE may be considered equal variants.

b. 100

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

The g note instead of a in FE1 (→EE1) must be a mistake of the engraver, corrected in subsequent impressions of both editions.

b. 100

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

c1 in A (→FEEE1EE2)

d1 in GE & EE3

..

The version of GE most probably resulted from revisions – due to the beginning of this motif being similar to the previous figures, authentic c1 was considered a mistake. This version was also introduced by EE3, most probably on the basis of one of GE. By coincidence, a few years later such a mistake – c1 minim instead of d1 in a similar harmonic context – was actually committed in FE1 of the Ballade in F major, Op. 38, b. 203.

b. 100-101

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, Chopin initially wrote a shorter slur, encompassing only the quaver figure in b. 100. The slur, written under the notes, was then removed and replaced with a longer one, over the notes.

b. 100-101

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

Slur to b. 101 in FC (→GE)

Slur to end of b. 100 in FE (→EE)

..

The longer slur of FC (→GE) resulted from a correction by Chopin, who in FC added an ending of the slur reaching the c1-e1 third.
