b. 82-83

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slurs & wedge in A

No markings in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The omitted R.H. articulation markings in GE (→FE,EE,IE) could have resulted from the uncertainty to the range of the slurs and to the presence and kind of the staccato marks. In A in many places Chopin would shorten slurs whenever it was impossible to enter them conveniently (cf. I mov., bars 17-20), hence the engraver could have hesitated between a slur encompassing 3 or 2 notes. The lonely (in spite of a few similar figures) staccato mark could have also been questionable. In the main text we provide the literal interpretation of these marks.

Dots & wedges in A

Dots in FE (→GE)

No marks in EE

..

The difference between dots and wedges in A is very clear, yet it was not included in FE (→GE). Taking into account numerous inaccuracies of the notation of staccato marks in FE, we give preference to the detailed indications of A. In EE all dots were omitted.

b. 84-85

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

No mark in A

Staccato dot in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The missing staccato mark in A seems to be Chopin's inadvertence, as he overlooked the first chord, separated from the remaining ones by the treble clef and positioned much higher than the following ones. In the main text we include the addition introduced already by GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 90

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

A wedge in A

A dot in GE (→FE)

No sign in EE

..

An evident wedge in A was reproduced in GE (→FE) as a dot (in GE, wedges were not used even once throughout the Mazurkas Op. 24). In EE, the sign was omitted.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Wedge in GC

No mark in FE (→EE) & GE1

Dot in GE2

..

The wedge in GC is very clear, so both the omission of the sign in GE1 and the fact of replacing it with a dot in GE2 are surprising.
