Issues : Errors in GE

b. 1-6

composition: Op. 28 No. 18, Prelude in F minor

4 slurs in A (→FC) & EE2

Slurs in b. 1, 2, 6 in FE

Slurs in b. 1, 2, 5 in GE

Slur in b. 6 in EE1

..

None of the editions based on manuscripts reproduced all 4 slurs over the pairs of chords in bars 1-2 and 5-6. EE1 overlooked yet 2 out of 3 slurs in FE. The complete set of slurs in EE2 results from a compilation of the slur of EE1 with the slurs reproduced from GE1.

b. 1

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Largo in A (→FEEE)

Lento in GE

..

Lento could have been entered by Chopin into the proof copy of the Ballade that served as the basis for GE1. However, it is uncertain whether that copy indeed included Chopin's amendments; therefore, the authenticity of Lento remains unsure. Chopin could have hesitated between these two indications – Largo works perfectly with the initial fragment,  and pesante, whereas Lento seems to be better suited to the second phrase, played , imbued with sorrow and resignation.

b. 2

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

Grace note in FE

No grace note in GE

Grace note with slur in EE

Our suggestion

..

The lack of the grace note in GE may result from the inattention of the engraver. A sligtly bigger gap between the two first crotchets of the bar may be interpreted as the space planned to accommodate that ornament. However, this is not at all certain, as uniform spacing between the notes is not strictly adhered to in GE. Therefore we offer a variant solution. The tiny slur in EE is certainly a routine addition of the editor.

A similar situation occurs in the Etude in F minor Op. 10 no. 9, bar 64.

b. 2-3

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 in GC

Longer  in FE (→EE)

No mark in GE1

Shorter   in GE2

..

According to us, out of two sources based directly on [A] – GC and FE – it is the copy that may convey a more accurate representation of this place in the autograph, since the text in FE is too tightly packed.

b. 2-3

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

..

The division of the chords between the hands on the 2nd and 3rd beats of bar 2 in GE (→FEEE) was reproduced incorrectly: contrary to A the b1 and bnotes were assigned to the L.H.
In GE1 (→FE) all five notes of the chord at the beginning of bar 3 were erroneously placed on one stem.
