Issues : Cautionary accidentals

b. 198

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

As in b. 182, in GE (→FE,EE,FESB) 2 poorly justified cautionary accidentals were added – a  to f, the 12th demisemiquaver, and a  to F, the 14th demisemiquaver. The former is also in AsI, yet Chopin omitted it in A (and in Af as well). In the main text we do not include any of the accidentals.

b. 255

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In AsI and A, there is a  to B (cautionary?) before the last octave in bar 255. In GE (→FE,EE), another one was added, to B1. In the main text we omit these unjustified accidentals.
At the beginning of bar 256, in the manuscripts there is also an accidental only to the top note of the L.H. octave. A natural to the bottom note was added already by GE (→FE,EE).

b. 256

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In the manuscripts there are no accidentals in the second triplet (on the 3rd beat of the bar). In the main text we include both added flats – perhaps by Chopin in GE (→FE,EE) – although it is only the  restoring a1 that is indispensable. Incidentally, also in the previous triplet, an octave higher, the  to g2 present in all sources is also of a cautionary nature.

b. 257

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

The first and last notes of the group of 4 small notes ending the trill are written in A (→GE1EE,GE2GE3,FESB) without accidentals. The use of G at the beginning of this group, natural in this context, is confirmed by the  of AsI and by the  added – along with a cautionary  to g – in the stage of proofreading FE1.

b. 269

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

In the main text we add a cautionary  to F. The accidental was also added by FE (it cannot be ruled out that at Chopin's request) and by EE3, probably on the basis of a comparison with FE.
