b. 300

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No markings in sources

[ten. ten.], our alternative suggestion

..

Both bass notes are certainly to be played tenuto, as in the previous bars. The missing slur could be understood as an indication that the articulation should be other than legato; however, the tenuto markings are of a reminding nature: they indicate that the rhythmic value should be held to the end, which results from the context though – separating these notes as an independent voice written in long rhythmic values would be pointless if they were not to be held in full. Due to the above, we refrain from burdening the main text with indications that do not carry new information.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

The cautionary natural specifying the sound of the 2nd semiquaver was added in the stage of proofreading FE1 (→FE2), probably at Chopin's request. It is worth noting that it was only in the editions that a clear need for this accidental manifested itself, in which the last semiquaver in the previous bar is provided with a flat – in A there is no accidental to any of these notes.

Slur from B-d to d in A

Tie to F in GE1 (→GE2,EE,FE1FE2)

Slur from B-d to c-e in FESB

Slur from F to c-e in GE3

..

The meaning of the slur, which in A clearly concerns the top L.H. voice, is unclear in GE1 (→GE2) – one can see it as a slightly too short tie to the F crotchet at the end of the 1st beat of the bar or an inaccurate slur encompassing three thirds in the top voice. The first interpretation was adopted by FE1 (→FE2) and EE, while the second – by FESB. In GE3 the slur combines the F crotchet with the c-e quaver. In the main text we reproduce the notation of A, confirmed by an analogous figure in the next bar.

In GE1 (→FE1,EE,GE2GE3,FESB) there is no  restoring d at the beginning of the 3rd beat of the bar. The patent mistake – the absence of this accidental also impacts the sound of the last L.H. semiquaver, resulting in a combo of d1 in the R.H. and d in the L.H. – was noticed only in FE2.

Sixth in AsI & A

f4 in GE (→FE,EE)

The absence of a3 in GE (→FEEE) almost certainly resulted from an oversight by the engraver of GE1.
