b. 45-47

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

f1 & f2 in A (→FEEE1)

f1 & f2 in GE & EE2 (→EE3)

f1 & f2 with naturals suggested by the editors

..

In A (→FE,EE1), there is no accidental to f1(2), the 1st quaver in b. 45 and 47. It made the reviser of GE, and then also of EE2 (→EE3), to consider it Chopin's mistake and to add a  to each of those notes. To avoid any doubts, in the main text we add cautionary naturals to them, in spite of the fact that there are no f notes in the preceding bars.

b. 45-47

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

At the beginning of b. 45 and 47, one can see deletions and corrections in the L.H. part in A. On the basis thereof, we can read the initial version of b. 45: . The change of the bass note from g to f is also visible in b. 47; however, there was no change to the rhythm there – the a1 minim was a syncopation from the very beginning. One can ponder why Chopin forwent rhythmic variants in these bars – according to us, the reason could have been the need to accentuate the 2nd crotchet in the bar in b. 45 as well to keep the rhythm cohesive with the previous bars.

GE1 (→GE1a,GE2GE3) has a1 as the 5th quaver. The error is indicated by:

  • c2 occurring in A (→FEEE),
  • analogy with bar 45,
  • a pianistically awkward cluster with the L.H. a1.

The error was corrected only in GE4.

In A, there is no  to the bottom note of the octave. The patent inaccuracy was corrected in FE (→GE,EE); such a clear defect could have been rectified by the reviser.
