signs in A

signs in FE (→EE)

signs in GE

..

As in the previous bars, the pedal asterisks in A are inconsistent and accidental – most of them are after the 3rd crotchet in a given half of the bar; some under (the 2nd in b. 41) or before (in b. 43). FE (→EE) did not reproduce that notation; however, it is also here that the differences in the placement seem to be of an accidental nature, particularly since some asterisks were placed inaccurately, hence it is difficult to determine whether they were to be placed under a given note or after it (the majority of the marks fall after the 3rd crotchet; however, in the 1st half of b. 42-43 they were placed under the note). In GE, the marks were placed under or slightly before the note; nevertheless, the differences are so insignificant that we consider all of them to be falling under the note, and this is the version we adopt to the main text (see also b. 36-39).

Accent under L.H. in A

2 short accents between staves in FE (→GE,EE)

2 long accents suggested by the editors

..

The two accents in FE must have resulted from Chopin's proofreading; apparently, he decided to homogenise the markings in b. 44 and 46. Taking into account the fact that the accents of A in b. 46 are clearly long, which, however, were reproduced by FE as short, we assume that it is also in b. 44 that Chopin most probably wanted to have long accents; this is the solution we adopt in the main text.

2 slurs, second to b. 45 in A

2 slurs in b. 44 in FE (→GE1,EE)

1 slur in GE1a

No slurs in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

The missing second slur in GE1a and both slurs in GE2 (→GE3GE4) must be errors of the engravers. The mistake committed in GE2 is a side effect of re-engraving this bar, on the edge of the page, due to the wear and tear of printing materials (engraving plates). In A, the second slur is clearly led to the beginning of b. 45; however, in FE (→GE1,EE), the ending of that slur does not reach that far.

Slurs in A

Slurs in FE (→GE)

Slurs in EE

..

The first of the two R.H. slurs beginning in b. 46 is written in A with a flourish, as a result of which in FE (→GE,EE) it erroneously starts from the 1st crotchet in the bar. It prompted the reviser of EE to shorten the preceding slur, which encompasses only b. 45 in this edition.

Long accents in A

Short accents in FE (→GE,EE)

..

It was typical of the first editions to shorten Chopinesque long accents (which is, of course, inaccurate).
