Issues : Errors repeated in FE

b. 164-165

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In these bars, there are no flats to a1 and A in A (→FE) (the accidental to a at the end of b. 164 is not necessary due to a respective  to the L.H. chord). What is more, the remaining necessary flats were inserted only in the first half of each of these bars. Moreover, in A Chopin even deleted the  that was initially put to G in b. 165 (cf. the description of A in some Preludes, Op. 28, e.g. in F minor, No. 8). GE and EE include the version adopted by us.

b. 170

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

None of the sources includes a  restoring e2 at the end of the bar. It must be Chopin's oversight – it is the most frequent mistake committed by Chopin. In this case, the likelihood of an error was additionally increased by the change of pitch of the note – initially, Chopin wrote here a2 in A – performed almost certainly due to the combination with the next bar.

b. 206

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Slur in A (→FEGE1GE1a,GE2GE3), contextual interpretation & in EE

No slur in GE4

..

In A, the slur that began in the previous bar (at the end of a line) was not continued here. This inaccuracy, so frequent in Chopin's works, was repeated by FE (→GE). We reproduce this incomplete, clearly erroneous version only in the graphic transcription, except for GE4, in which it was also the beginning of this slur in b. 205 that was removed. The ending of the slur was added only by EE.

b. 217-219

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A (→FE) there are no sharps raising f2(3) to f2(3) in b. 217 and 219. The inaccuracy, typical of Chopin, was corrected by GE and EE. Chopin wrote in A cautionary naturals to a1 in both bars and to a in b. 219; they were repeated by all editions. FE (→GE,EE) also added a  to a1 in b. 217. In the main text we include all these accidentals.
Moreover, GE added in both bars a cautionary  also to a2.
