b. 87-88

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A, due to corrections, the group of quavers ending b. 87 was written down on an adjacent stave, which leads to confusion as to the range of the slur – it goes beyond the bar line yet it stays far from the bcrotchet falling on the beginning of b. 88. According to us, it is much more likely that the slur should have been led to the beginning of the next bar, which is indicated by a more transparent situation in an analogous motif a bar earlier. FE (→GE,EE) ended the slur in b. 87; in addition, a new slur starts from the 1st note in b. 88, which is clearly against the notation of A.

Staccato in A

No mark in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The missing staccato dot is most probably an oversight by the engraver of FE (→GE,EE), perhaps provoked by an erroneous interpretation of the slurs – see the note at the end of b. 87.

rallentando in A

rallentando - - a tempo in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The dashes marking the range of rallentando and the a tempo indication were added – certainly at Chopin's request – in the stage of proofreading FE (→GE,EE). The other elements added while proofreading – see the remaining notes in b. 93.

No slur in A

Slur in FE (→GE,EE)

Slur suggested by the editors

..

The slur encompassing the 1st half of the bar was added – most probably by Chopin – in the stage of proofreading FE (→GE,EE). We consider it simplified due to graphical reasons (perhaps by the engraver); in the main text, we suggest a slur encompassing the entire accompanying figure, modelled on the previous bars.

In A, there is no  raising e1 to e1. The patent inaccuracy was corrected by FE (→GE,EE). It is noteworthy that in A the  to the 4th quaver, e3, was inserted between the already written down noteheads.
