b. 49-52

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

No markings in A

Pedalling in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The pedalling in these bars must be a Chopinesque addition in the stage of proofreading FE1.

b. 52

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

..

In A, there is no  to the bottom note of the octave. The patent inaccuracy was corrected in FE (→GE,EE); such a clear defect could have been rectified by the reviser.

b. 53-54

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

The cautionary naturals to c1 in b. 53 and C in b. 54 were added – perhaps by Chopin – in the stage of proofreading FE (→GE,EE).

b. 53

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

dim. - - in A

No indication in FE (→GE,EE)

Our alternative variant suggestion

..

It is difficult to say whether the missing diminuendo resulted from an oversight of the engraver of FE (→GE,EE) or from Chopin's proofreading. In A, the indication is very clear, hence there are no visible reasons why someone would not notice it; on the other hand, there are no traces of it having been removed in FE. In this situation, in the main text we follow the version of FE, our principal source, proofread by Chopin twice. The text of A may be considered an equal variant; as an alternative to the main text, we suggest a variant solution with brackets.

b. 54-55

composition: Op. 23, Ballade in G minor

Pedalling in A

Pedalling in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The pedalling of A, in which the pedals in the 2nd half of b. 54 and in b. 55 encompass half a bar each, was considered inaccurate already by FE (→GE,EE). According to us, in this case, the engraver of FE properly assessed the situation – Chopin wrote only the first  mark in b. 54 while acknowledging the change of a chord on the 3rd crotchet. The inaccuracy could have been caused by the R.H. part not having been written out – see the previous note in this bar.
