The absence of the L.H. slur is probably due to an oversight by the engraver of EE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in EE |

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

The whole-bar slur of GE probably resulted from an erroneous interpretation of the inaccurate slur of [A]. Chopin would generally start slurs running from a note written in notes tied by one or a few ties either from the first or last of those notes, but never the middle one. In the absence of a slur in FE (→EE), in the main text we refer to an analogous situation in b. 182. In the version of GE in which b is tied twice, the suggested slur is tantamount to the one written down in the source. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Inaccuracies in GE |

b. 250-260
|
composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor
..
Separate L.H. slurs in b. 250-252 and 258-260 are an arbitrary revision of GE2. One reason for this might be the changes to the original layout performed in that edition, in particular moving the R.H. part fragments written down by Chopin on the bottom stave together with the L.H. part to the top stave. Due to the separation of the parts of both hands, it becomes less intuitive that the slur over the R.H. part applies to both hands (we do not reproduce the layout of GE2 in our transcriptions). category imprint: Differences between sources; Source & stylistic information issues: GE revisions |

In FE b. 260 opens a new line, in which the slur from the preceding bars is not continued, although its ending in b. 259 clearly indicates that it should be continued. It is difficult to say whether this inaccuracy was related to the fact that EE omitted the slur. In the main text we give the slur of GE, which is certainly correct. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Errors in EE , Uncertain slur continuation |

The absence of slurs in FE (→EE) must be considered an oversight of Chopin, Fontana or the engraver – slurs are present both in analogous b. 3-4 and later in the introduction, in b. 263-267. category imprint: Differences between sources |
