It is difficult to clearly explain the origin of the slurs of FE (→EE). The absence of corresponding slurs in b. 50, of which the discussed bar was a literal (not written out) repetition in the manuscript, points to the proofreading of FE1 (performed by Chopin?). However, it raises the question of how they could influence the performance – a slur with a number below was commonly used to mark an irregular rhythmic group back then – and, consequently, the question of why they were added here, of all places. Of course, the absence of a rational (according to us) explanation does not exclude the authenticity of this addition. On the other hand, the slurs could have been in the basis and overlooked in b. 50 – it is here that three beams are missing in that bar, out of which one was almost certainly overlooked by the engraver. As both the authenticity of these slurs and their purpose are questionable, we do not include them in the main text.
