Slurs in A (→FEEE)

Slurs in FC (→GE)

..

In this case, it is difficult to attribute the different slurring of FC (→GE) to Fontana's carelessness – he may have assumed that Chopin meant such slurs, separated over the rest. The unequivocal slurs of A probably referred to the initial version of the melody (without rest), yet Chopin did not change them after having corrected the rhythm; moreover, in a few other places, he even combined slurs over rests – see b. 30-31 and 34-35.

b. 43-58

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

..

In each of b. 44-46, 49, 52, 56 and 58, the L.H. part is marked with a / in A (→FC), which implies that the preceding bar should be repeated. Moreover, in FC the copyist, contrary to A, marked entire b. 48 in such a way. The abridged notation was used in the manuscripts also in the remaining bars to mark the 2nd half of the bar – b. 43, 47, 48 (only A), 50, 51, 53-55 and 57. Similar notation was also used in FE, where the 2nd half of the bar was marked with a / in b. 43-54 and 57-58.

b. 43-46

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

..

A is missing the  lowering a to a in b. 43 and three subsequent ones, marked in the L.H. part as repetition thereof. The patent inaccuracy was corrected both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE).

b. 47-49

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

..

In A and in the remaining sources there is a cautionary  next to A in b. 47. In the main text we add in this bar a  also next to a. The accidental was also added in FC (→GE). In addition, since in FC (differently than in A) b. 48-49 were marked in an abridged manner as repetition of b. 47, GE printed the cautionary naturals next to A and a (present in FC in b. 47) also in b. 48-49. All those cautionary naturals (including the unnecessary ones) were also introduced in EE2, most probably on the basis of comparison with GE1.

No R.H. rests in A (→FE)

Rests in FC (→GE)

Rests & pause in EE

..

The rests added on the upper staff in FC (→GE) & EE suggest playing the three D1 minims with the L.H. which is almost certainly against Chopin's intention.
