b. 42

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

..

In FE the 2nd semiquaver in both figures is an erroneous c note, whereas in EE – most probably as a result of revision of this clearly false version – e. The version of EE, although possible in terms of harmony, is pianistically improbable. In turn, the pencilled correction of c to A written in FES, compliant with the version of A (→FCGE), may come from Chopin.

Long accent in FES, possible interpretation

..

The pencilled addition in FES, big but vague, could be a  mark or – which, according to us, is much more likely – a long accent. The best candidate for an accent seems to be the dotted b1-b2 quaver; however, due to the above interpretation being surrounded by uncertainties, we do not suggest it in the main text.

Fingering in EE

Fingering written into FED

..

In the main text we give the fingering entered into FED, most probably Chopinesque. An identical fingering was added in EE; in addition, it was marked more accurately.

Fingering in EE

Fingering written into FED

..

In the main text we give the fingering of FED, coming from a lesson with Chopin. The fingering given in EE would most probably comply with it if it were not for the mistake in the last given digit, which was almost certainly supposed to mark the 4th, and not the 5th finger (the mistake indicates that the person adding the fingering was used to the "continental" style of notation).
