b. 37

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

..

At the beginning of the bar, Chopin wrote cautionary sharps before a1(2) in A (→FCGE). According to us, since a1(2) was restored at the end of the previous bar, these accidentals are unjustified; they were removed in FE (→EE1) and restored – most probably after GE1 – in EE2. In the main text we omit these accidentals; in turn, we add sharps before the L.H. octave.

b. 37-38

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

5 long accents in A

Different accents in FC, possible interpretation

5 short accents in FE & GE

5 vertical accents in EE

..

Five clear long accents in A were not correctly reproduced in any other source. In FC it is the last two and possibly the first one with arms of different length that could be considered long; we assume that it is only the last two accents that are long. FE and GE contain common, short accents, which was the most common way the Chopinesque long accents were interpreted by the engravers. The vertical accents of EE resulted from an arbitrary practice, typical of that edition.

b. 40

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

..

In A (→FE,FCGE) there are two unjustified accidentals in this bar – a  repeated before f1, a quaver in the bottom voice, and a  before b1. EE overlooked the former. In the main text we do not include those accidentals; in turn, we add a cautionary  before the e1 quaver and a  before c1 on the 3rd beat of the bar.

b. 43

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

..

As was the case with b. 3, of which this bar is a repetition in the manuscripts, not written out, in A (→FE,FCGE) there is no  restoring g1 in the bottom R.H. voice on the 3rd crotchet. The mistake was noticed only in EE.

b. 61

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

Long accent in A (→FC)

No mark in FE (→EE1)

Short accent in GE & EE2

..

The typical long accent written in A was reproduced in FC less vividly, as a result of which GE gave a short accent. FE (→EE1) overlooked the mark, while EE2 added it after GE1.
