b. 52

composition: Op. 28 No. 19, Prelude in E♭ major

in A (→FC)

in FE (→EE)

in GE

..

Adjusting  hairpins to the width of a bar is a routine revision of FE (→EE), like in previous bars. The change of direction of the mark is a mistake of the engraver of GE, often encountered in first editions of works by Chopin.

b. 53-61

composition: Op. 28 No. 19, Prelude in E♭ major

G-b-e in A (→FC,FEEE) & GE2 (→GE3)

E-b-B in GE1

In GE1 a mistake was committed twice in analogous phrases – in b. 53 and 61, i.e. on the 3rd beat of the bar, the preceding triplet was repeated. The reason could have been the confusion of similar pairs of bars 50-51 and 52-53 (and 58-59 and 60-61, respectively) and the distraction – the abridged markings of some repeated figures used in the manuscripts. The mistakes were corrected in GE2 (→GE3).

The change of pedal on the 3rd beat of the bar is an arbitrary addition of Fontana, who proofread FE1 in the absence of Chopin. He intervened due to the single  mark at the beginning of the bar left in A (which, in turn, must have resulted from corrections and crossings-out). Upon seeing a change of the bass note, Fontana complemented the markings in a standard, safe manner; however, he did not check the authentic pedalling in analogous b. 61. Interestingly, in FC he added only a  mark at the end of the bar.

The 2nd quaver in GE1 is an a. The mistake, which could have resulted from the confusion of bars, was rectified in GE2 (→GE3).
