Slurs

b. 1-12

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

Slur in AI

More probable reading of slurs in A

Less probable reading of slurs in A (→GEFEEE)

..

The first slur of the Mazurka begins on a bar-line in A, which allows a twofold interpretation. The slur at the end of bar 12 (1a volta) also may be read as encompassing only two quavers or longer.

b. 3-7

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

In AI there is no slur in the L.H. part in bars 3 & 7. In the editors' opinion it is just an economical notation, for a corresponding slur is to be found in bar 1, which contains the same notes and rhythm as in the discussed bars. In the main text we give slurs found in A (→GEFEEE). Similarly in bars 27 & 31.

b. 4-5

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

Slur in AI (literal reading) and in A (→GEFEEE)

The slur in AI, contextual interpretation

..

The slur in A (→GEFEEE)  ends above the quaver gin bar 4. The corresponding sign in AI is ambiguous; the slur end does not cross the bar line, yet the shape of the final (added) section points to f1 in bar 5 as the target note. In the further part of the Mazurka slurs in analogous places are visibly longer: although in bars 8-9 the slur of A is unclear, both AI in that place and A in bars 28-29 and 32-33 have slurs reaching f1. In this situation we consider the notation of bars 4-5 to be inaccurate; this decision finds confirmation in the correction visible in A, consisting in lengthening the slur at the transition between bars 28-29.

No slur in AI

A slur in A (→GEFEEE)

..

There are no slurs in the L.H. in bars 4 and 8 of  AI, Chopin wrote them later in A. We include those slurs in our text, just like it was done in all the first editions. In A, Chopin also added slurs in bars 28 and 32.

Longer slur in AI

Slur in AI without a "triplet" slur

Slurs in A (→GEFEEE)

..

Here and in analogous bars 9-10 our main text repeats the slurring of A (→GEFEEE). However, in the editors' opinion it is possible that a longer slur in AI better reflects Chopin's idea of articulation and phrasing in these places. This is supported by the comparison with analogous bars 29-30 & 33-34, where A has slurs corresponding just to the notation of AI.
