Slurs

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

In A (→GEFEEE) the slurs begins from a flat1 in bar 6 and we rely on that logical notation in our main text. In AI the beginning of that slur is unclear  - the beginning is bar 6 is missing.

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

In A, the slur over these bars was in fact combined from three shorter fragments.

The end of slur in AI

LIteral reading of A (→GEFEEE)

Contextual interpretation of A

..

In A it is not quite clear where this slur ends, but in AI it definitely reaches f1 in bar 9, just like in A in analogous bars 28-29. Therefore in our main text we extend the slur to f1.

A longer slur in AI

Slur in AI without a "triplet" slur

Slurs in A, literal reading

Slurs in A (→GE2), contextual interpretation

GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The first slur, encompassing the triplet, is written inaccurately in A, patently shifted to the left. This resulted in its earlier beginnig in GE1 (→FEEE). The correct interpretation of the sign, in keeping with the analogous bars 5-6 as well as 29-30 and 33-34, was introduced in GE2.

AI has different slurs here, as in bars 5-6. We propose the longer one as an alternative to the slurring in A.

Our suggestion

..

Slurs—and other performance markings—differ in AI from the later A version. In A Chopin wrote down two slurs (no account taken of a slur linked with the triplet—see below) but placed the beginning of the second one in such a way that it may be regarded as he would like to link it to the first. It was thus understood in GE (→FEEE) which give one slur. Starting a new slur after a pause which stops the flow of music seems more natural.

According to the General editorial principles, p. 16, in the main text we omit a slur over the triplet in bar 10. We also supplement a slur ending overlooked in A (→GEFEEE) in bar 12 (2a volta).
