b. 4-18

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

..

The majority of the groups of repeated quavers were written in A (→FCGE) as dotted crotchets provided with quaver tremolos. In A this is how the L.H. in the 2nd half of b. 4, 5, 7, 10-13 and 18 and the R.H. in the 2nd half of b. 10 were marked. A similar situation occurs in FC (→GE) – except b. 18. Such notation is not observed at all in FCI.

b. 4-5

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

First slur to a1 in A, literal reading

First slur to end of bar 4 in FC (→GE)

Continuous slur to bar 10 in FE (→EE)

..

The range of the slur in b. 4 is unclear in A – it can be interpreted as a slur dragged to the a1 crotchet or as an unfinished slur/tenuto encompassing that crotchet along with the bottom voice quavers that fill it (as was reproduced by Fontana in FC). As it is slurs/tenutos that prevail in similar situations in the entire Prelude – particularly consistently from b. 65 on – in the main text we give such a slur. The continuous slur of FE (→EE), certainly contrary to the notation of A, probably resulted from the engraver's carelessness.

b. 5

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

g2 in FCI & A (→FC,FEEE)

f2 in GE1

g2 with  in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The version of GE1 featuring f2 on the 3rd quaver is most probably a mistake of the engraver. In GE2 f2 was rightly changed to g2; at the same time, a cautionary  was added before the latter. We include this addition, which we find justified, in the main text.

The missing a notes in the chords in the 2nd half of the bar are a mistake of the engraver of GE.
