Pedalling

b. 86-87

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

2 pedals in AF (→FEEE), contextual interpretation

Two-bar long pedal in GE

Our variant suggestion

..

Both versions of the pedalling are most probably authentic; however, it is likely that the two-bar pedal from GE is the version Chopin wanted to forgo, yet he overlooked this place while performing corrections in [AG] (→GE). Due to this reason, in the main text we suggest a variant solution, in which we leave the issue of changing the pedal under the bars to the discretion of the performer.

b. 89-93

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

 in bar 91 in AI

    in AF

    in FE & GE1

 in bar 89 in EE

    in GE2

..

The  mark in b. 91 is the only pedalling marking in AI. The four-bar pedal in the later sources develops and specifies it, although the placement of the  mark is unclear due to the differences between the sources. According to us, in this context the individual sources are rather a result of inaccuracies of notation than of different concepts. In the main text we take into account the message conveyed by the  mark written by Chopin in AF – before the 1st note of b. 93, i.e. at the end of b. 92. At the same time, it is a graphical compromise between the notation of AF and FE & GE1 (coincidentally, it corresponds to the notation of GE2).

b. 103-104

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

Pedalling in AF (→FEEE)

Pedalling in GE

..

The shorter pedal of AF is the original version, left here most probably by inadvertence (b. 103 opens the page) – in analogous b. 11-12 Chopin changed this pedalling in AF to the one featured here in GE.
In FE (→EE) the  mark was placed slightly earlier, which is irrelevant in this case.

b. 117-119

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No pedalling in AF (→FEEE)

Pedalling in GE

..

Just like in b. 25-29, the pedalling markings in b. 117 and 119 are an improvement introduced by Chopin in [AG] or at the time of proofreading GE1. See also b. 121.

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No markings in AF (→FEEE)

In this context the missing  must be considered an inadvertence, hence we add it after the previous bars.
