  b. 89-93

 in bar 91 in AI

    in AF

    in FE & GE1

 in bar 89 in EE

    in GE2

The  mark in b. 91 is the only pedalling marking in AI. The four-bar pedal in the later sources develops and specifies it, yet determining Chopin's intention with reference to the position of the  is not easy. The composer wrote this mark three times – in AF, in [AG] (→GE1) and probably in the last stage of proofreading of FE, since it is absent in EE. In terms of sources, we have a choice between the directly accessible entry of Chopin in AF, which he wrote himself, and two identical entries yet known only secondhand. However, even if we allowed for a possible inaccuracy of GE1 and FE, we consider it highly unlikely that the handwritten entries, constituting the base thereof, could have included a  in b. 93. It means that Chopin most probably abandoned this version, thus we can limit ourselves to the versions in which a  is within b. 92: before the 3rd beat of the bar in GE1 and FE and at the end of the bar in GE2 (the latter is actually a revision or inaccuracy, yet in practice it conveys the same meaning as AF – in terms of timing, a  before the 1st note of b. 93 equals a  at the end of b. 92 – and it may be considered an interpretation thereof).

From the practical point of view, the choice of one of these versions does not seem to be significant – in either case the pedal must be released during the tied g2 minim so that it is left alone after the accumulated sound of the G major chord has been extinguished. At the same time, none of the entries suggests an abrupt cut of this sound through a sudden pedal release (although it cannot be entirely excluded). In this situation, it is the individual acoustic conditions that should determine the moment of pedal release rather than an accurate implementation of an uncertain version of notation. Taking into account all the above circumstances, in the main text we give the version of GE2 as an interpretation of AF adapted to the layout we adopt in our transcription, in which b. 93 opens a new line.
